Re: Photo Collection
I cannot be certain without reviewing photos at home (I am at sea at this moment), but I believe the Algocen had docked at St Lawrence Cement prior to CHS in the last photo series. During the time at the cement dock, I shared dinner with Captain Hougesen and Chief Kilpatrick. Many time more in the coming years I would meet them in the Twin Ports, getting a free lunch and tour in exchange for being a chauffeur for the crew and going into town.
Garbear - This photo you posted absolutely made my day! I was showing the picture to my co-workers on my ship now (European decent), and they were asking many questions, as of course the lake boat design is not so common in the world. They were astounded when I said a 1960s ship was not considered very old at the time, late 1990s. Not the newest, but we all thought they would last for many years more.

A few more on a snowy evening in Duluth.

I'm not the most technical guy in the world. This was the easiest route for me to take.Greenshirt wrote:garbear:
Is there any reason why you posted these in here instead of the photo gallery itself? Honestly just curious. If we ever lost the forum, it'd be a good backup to have them in the photo gallery.
Now that I think about it, in the photo gallery you can't have user comments and questions.

Garbear - Thanks again for keeping the photos going. Your time now is when I started to seriously follow the ships (being old enough to do so, with teenage knowledge...) I recall the Oakglen in the Twin Ports, though vaguely. I used to see her many more times in Thunder Bay.
Please keep sharing all you have for photos. I really enjoy the chronological format. Every day I check to see what month and year we are up to now! You should be proud of having all these pictures from the years, like a document of time.

The effort is very appreciated, GarBear. Have a fine day, sir.garbear wrote:Can't remember how many times we fit-out at Jones Island, but we did. Those photos are buried in a box under another box. I've been hunting high and low for shots of the harbor from that era, looking for old barges and tugboats which may have been hanging around in the vicinity. Do you happen to have any such photos? I've usually found the little tugs and barges in the background or margins of most photographs as they were often overlooked. Thank you for your time, and thanks for sharing your photos. I've always liked shots taken by guys that put in a lot of time on the boats.

I'm slipping. Missed another one.
Re: Photo Collection
As time went on taking photos it became harder to get a good shot when it came to General Mills. Chain link fences and that bush that helped block the bow of the Algonorth.
Re: Photo Collection
A few more on a grey, but not windy, day in Duluth.
Re: Photo Collection
A few more this evening.
Re: Photo Collection
I admit I've got cobwebs when it comes to the Leitch at St. Lawrence Cement.GuestfromEU wrote:Thank you for continuing these posts, Garbear! Our paths might have crossed at one point or another.
Did the Gordon C Leitch bring cement often to the St Lawrence dock? I recall the Algocape, Algocen, Quebecois, and Montrealais all as frequent visitors.
Looking forward to more photos (until you run out, anyway!)
