The Royalton only carried ore between Thunder Bay and Indiana Harbor primarily because its size allowed it to unload at Inland Steel's size restricted Dock #3. As a Canadian flagged vessel it could not carry ore from U.S. ports into that location. I would imagine the Jones Act also prevented it from shuttling ore between Inland's docks in a manner similar to such operations by the E. J. Block and Clarence B. Randall. When Caland ceased mining ore, the Royalton went to scrap shortly afterwards. Other than the Jones Act reference, this information comes from the books The Inland Steel Fleet 1911-1998 and Fleet Histories Vol. 10.

We loaded ion ore up the Kam river for Indiana Harbour when I was on the Royalton

There was the Gravity ore dock owned by CN and the loader type called Valley Camp.

Was there more than one ore dock? Just wondering where ore from the Steep Rock mine was loaded if this dock was for Calando. Thanks.

The last shipment of iron ore from Thunder Bay was carried by Canada Steamship Lines' Rimouski on September 25, 1986.

I know after they stopped shipping ore from there, potash was shipped for a while Frankcliffe hall at least once But mostly Algoma ships mostly the Rail Way and Canyon but also a couple loads by the Barber.

Only once was there loading a trial shipment of potash and never heard of another boat going there.

I don't know if they stockpiled a lot of ore but if they stopped mining in 1979 shipments through Thunder Bay continued well into the mid to late eighties, CSL bulkers so I assume it was going to Hamilton, the last inland vessel i remember was the Ryerson in either the fall of 1980 or 81.

From photos and articles I read that was where they loaded Caland ore. This is the dock today.

I think it was they had a normal gravity dock and Vally camp which if memory serves me it was like escanaba

i beieve that was the high dock also known as the cnr dock a few years ago there were plans to reuse the dock in some form or way but nothing has transpired yet

From an old 1990 Greenwood Guide I found that there was a Valley Camp ore dock at Thunder Bay. Is this the same facility that shipped ore from the Caland mine to Inland Steel?
