The hover platforms where just like a hovercraft but without the pilot house, hence why they where secured to the bow of the Henry.

Reading an article on the Henry came across this:

While operational, the Alexander Henry was used in the 1970s to test experimental methods of icebreaking — using hover platforms at the front of the ship. But that proved to be too noisy and costly.

What were the "Hover Platforms" and how did they work?

Apparently anchored on Lake Erie's north shore near Blenheim. Weather? On AIS, look for tug Salvage Monarch.

Toured the vessel in Kingston at the Maritime Museum in 1987. Was so impressed with the tour and presentation, 21 years later
retired from US Coast Guard, 2 Buoy Tenders and 2 Aids to Navigation teams among the units served. She will be missed.

That vessel had a magnificent wooden wheel in the aft steering area. We saw it many years ago when we toured it in Kingston.

The Alexander Henry was not moored in Picton. She was a a private dock near the eastern tip of Prince Edward County. The Radium Yellowknife called, at 1910, just after leaving the dock as she was just turning into the Upper Gap heading for the lake.
The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes had their annual General Meeting last month with Jim Kennard as the guest speaker. The Board of Directors are very enthusiastic about the Portsmouth Harbour development which uses the property of the Kingston Penitentiary. There is even hope of another museum ship in the future.

At 1910 approx., the Radium Yellowknife, with the Alexander Henry, was approaching the Upper Gap near Prince Edward County. She called the inbound English River to ask about sea conditions. The English River reported winds of 10 to 15 knots from the South West and seas of less than 1 metre but building.

There was a time issue.Tug schedule and a large dock fee involved if Alexander Henry not move quickly as I understand it.
