It was 4000 gallons of no. 2 all removed from its bunker tank, according to the incident report. Another 600 gallons of lube oil remained aboard, apparently. Originally it was thought around 20,000 gallons were on board, but this number was the vessel's bunker capacity (89.5 tonnes). I don't know what the motive power was for the vessel's unloading pumps, whether its Nydquist & Holm 6-cylinder Diesel (if still installed) or a smaller auxiliary, but I assume the oil was for whatever that engine was.

When the barge Robert Koch went aground press reports tell of 40,000 gallons of diesel oil carried aboard that was later removed. Was this used to operate its cement handling equipment? Some references, such as Ahoy & Farewell II, state there were only 4,000 gallons of diesel on the barge. The 40,000 gallons seems kind of high, does anyone have any insight into this?
