Maybe I'm missing something, but this begs the question;
how is a USCG boat slightly more than a dozen years old, need such major engine repairs that she's practically out of service during winter operations ? I would think that a longer operating horizon would be expected from such a vessel.

Alder engine test

The USCGC Alder left its dock in Duluth this morning to test its engines after repairs. It looks like it ran into thicker ice than expected as it did not make it to the Superior Entry as planned, but after a few attempts of back and forth runs, it turned around and returned to its dock.
