Presently in Australia, a sheet metal worker earns $45,000 to $55,000 per year plus overtime and superannuation. Conversely, a Chinese yard worker earns approximately $US650-$800 a month.
What does a Canadian or American metal worker make?

Thanks for the replies.
I would like to add it would have been better to have had these ships built on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes if not a Canadian shipyard.

You forgot Donjon in Erie.middlerouge wrote:It would be a shame if it shut down, as there are not many yards left that are able to handle vessels of over 300 ft or so. Only 4 come to mind, bayship, ironhead, fraiser, and thunderbay, knowing they have done layup work in the past few years. Could this create a possible shortage of dry-docks?
Re: Port Weller and Port Arthur Ship Yards
What about Don Jon in Erie, Pennsylvania? Couldn't they handle anything over 300 feet or so? Also, if Port Weller does close then where would the tug Presque Isle go for her 5 year CG survey? Isn't Port Weller the only yard on the lakes right now that can do her 5 year survey for some reason perhaps due to a certain depth?

What's next for Port Weller? Is it going to close up like Collingwood or are there other interests looking to purchase it?
As well, what's the current status of the Port Arthur ship yard? I think it's a shame that new ships aren't being built in Canada for the Great Lakes.
