The original post made no reference to the tonnage of the Mate's license.

An any gross ton mate does allow you to act as a 100 ton master without further endorsements. Tugs are totally different. To be master on a tug you must hold master of towing vessels or a 500 ton license (or 1600 ton if tug is over 500 GRT) and have a completed towing officers assessment record.

Not any more. You used to be able to captain a tug with an unlimited Mate's license but no more.

I have often heard that if you pass the Coast Guard's exams (paper exams) for a Mate's License, you Automatically receive your 100-tonne Captain's License. Is this true?
