The American Spirit is not optimized for carrying coal due to her lower cubic capacity compared to the other ASC 1,000 foot vessels.
The Spirit, when built as George A. Stinson in 1978, was built for the movement of iron ore pellets. As a result, she has two-conveyor belts below her cargo-hold and not three like her near-sisters, the James R. Barker Barker and Mesabi Miner.
Both the James R. Barker and Mesabi Miner have a coal capacity of 57,00 net tons. American Spirit's coal capacity is 50,900 net tons.
The other ASC footers were built in Sturgeon Bay and were a general design for the efficient movement of coal and iron ore. As such, they have a deeper hull depth (56-feet vs. the Spirit, Barker and Miner.
On occasion the American Spirit has handled coal.
