One of the Vessel Passages I used to follow and rely on that was on the old site was the Straits of Mackinac. There were two listings for them one was for the Round Island portion and I don't recall what was used on the part that didn't have Round Island? I hope that someday those two will return to the new site along with the current listing of Passage that are there now. Although I go to and read them frequently, the main two that I rely on and read daily and regularly are the Mariatown/Iroquois Lock and the 2021 Foreign Vessel Positions on the Lakes. I am glad to see at least those two Passages on the new site and hope that they continue and would like to thank both Ron Beaupre and Matt Miner for all they do in keeping up on those reports. Great job guys and hope that you can continue to provide reports for those passages and keep them going!

We apologized to Phil privately and explained the situation. We greatly valued and appreciated the efforts he put into his reports.

We are an all volunteer organization with a small budget. This project quickly overwhelmed what little resources we had and the developer was setting up the manual vessel passages in no particular order. For what ever reason only a few were moved and we were left to move the larger sets manually. With all the issues that came up we didn't have the volunteers to finish this part of the site in a timely manner though it was and still is planned. The reaction has been less than understanding which has driven away some of the volunteers compounding the problem. If anyone would like to help with moving and updating the content please e-mail [email protected]

Sorry to hear that Phil. I am now up to an hour and half work a day at least compiling the News, Port Reports and History pages. Thanks for all your hard work!

I second your comments Hugh and agree with you. I too feel for Phil and sympathize with him as far as spending the 3 hours a day plus on the boat stuff. I’ve done my fair share as well as far as spending up to 3-4 hours a day every day trying to track and keep my own personal records from different notes that I gather and collect. It’s not an easy thing to do and because of all the time I spend online, now my health has taken a turn for the worst. Won’t go into details on that other than it’s a serious issue. Back to the subject at hand though, I’ve followed Marine Traffic for many years and at first was ok with them. But, over the years they’ve also made several changes some good and some not so good. My biggest complaint I have with them and their changes is that one, they don’t keep some of their information beyond 24 hours now! It used to be years ago, they would keep stuff for at least a week or so. The other thing, sometimes they’ll make changes and updates and not even tell anyone they’re doing it. Thanks Phil though for all of your years of dedication and loyalty to this site along with your reports for both the Algoma and Great Lakes fleets. We’ll miss them and you!

I decided to terminate the reports. For over twenty years, I spent up to three hours a day and and over $130 a month for Marine Traffic subscription for updating the reports.

I expected them to move to the new site and seeing the 2021 Foreign Vessel Position on the Lakes, Mariatown/Iroquois Lock Passages posted, I thought mine would be up shortly, then other sites posted like Holland which hasn't been updated since 2018 were there. I asked about my sites and never received an answer, waiting on the person who was responsible what I was told, it was an easy decision to terminate them. I had received a tip that they would not be moved shortly after the update to the new site.

For the first time since finding Boatnerd on Compuserve in the 90's my home page is no longer Boatnerd!

I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, but I'm definitely enjoying the extra 3 hours a day of free time now.

Algoma and Great Lakes Fleet Vessel Passages

by Denny » July 28, 2021, 10:27 am

Does anyone know what happened to both the Algoma and USS/GLF Vessel Passage pages on the Vessel Passage page of the boatnerd website? After they made changes to the website, I see that there are a few Vessel Passages yet both Algoma and Great Lakes fleet have yet to return. The Algoma and USS/GLF fleet reports were often and always done by Phil Nash who BTW did an excellent and outstanding job with both of these reports. For many years I have followed his reports and relied on them heavily for any information as far as Algoma along with USS/GLF fleet ships. If I missed something for some reason, I knew that thanks to Phil Nash and his reports that I could always look to those as far as getting any missed information. Now without those reports here on the boatnerd site and Vessel Passage pages, I have no way of getting any type of missed reports. Example, IF I miss something on Marine Traffic then I cannot find it anymore on Algoma and Great Lakes fleet reports. Will the Algoma and Great Lakes fleet reports someday return here? Hope that they do return at some point! Would hate to see these two valuable reports no longer appear here on the boatnerd site. I'm sure that many agree!
