Keep up the great work! You make the forums more civilized than many of the others out there.

Agree completely and big thanks to the volunteers that run the site!

Answer to "Volunteer".

You have presented a great explanation. Thank you.

All of the volunteers have accepted an onerous task, one I do not envy.

I, for one, appreciate the job you are doing. The inappropriate posts must, at times, make you wonder why you have accepted this work.

Keep up the great work! You make the forums more civilized than many of the others out there.

Thank you.

As "Bookworm," I know your frustration. My love of the ships and wanting to share them with others motivated my photography but it was my time & money (gas), making me a volunteer. Some days, the submissions went through within the hour but increasingly there were long delays while comments submitted after me were posted ahead of my photos.

Good evening,

By no means am I suggesting the new site is either a) bad or b) badly run. I have established/maintained a website and forum or two in my life.

I fully support the transition to a new format, no problems here.

There may be issues with the new board.

I replied to my own post stating, I think, that the John J Boland had departed Bay Ship at a certain time. That post never made it past moderation.

Similarly I posted a couple of times reporting activity in Sturgeon Bay (Anderson arrival, Munson arrival, Anderson departure, etc) which also did not make it as posts. Were they reviewed and deemed unacceptable? No idea. Did the forum have an issue and not post for review? No idea.

The long and short is...there's an issue somewhere.

I don't post anything off topic, political, religious, offensive (unless there are fleets you don't like), or anything else that might be deemed inappropriate.

The post I replied to on the new forum...which was never posted...was regarding the Roger Blough. I noted that the photos which looked like there was work going on onboard the Blough was an optical illusion, the workers were on the Mark W Barker in the foreground.

To cut a long story short, I'm not taking deletion personally but there might be an issue with the board itself. The posts I make are straight facts - this boat arrived, that boat left, etc - just facts. I assume they're not being moderated out...I assume there's a problem.

Please bear with us as the new site undergoes further development. It is turning out to be difficult for the developers to fine tune the new forums in the Word Press format. When initially rolled out, the new forums required a password, which was deemed by many to be undesirable. So it was switched to require moderation, but showed every post waiting for approval, including the majority of submissions that are spam (FYI, the percentage of spam is far worse on these old forums than the new ones). Posts awaiting approval are now hidden from public view, but are currently not listed in one central spot for moderators to view, at least that I am aware of. So each and every topic has to be manually opened to look for hidden replies, which are then opened, reviewed and/or approved. Perhaps the other moderators were aware of this, but it is something I just found out today. So there are probably a large number of replies to topics on the new forums that are still waiting for review.

In regards to the perception that we are heavy handed in our moderation efforts, please keep the following in mind: 1) this is a G rated site, so posts with any foul, inappropriate, or suggestive language will get edited or deleted. (I personally include the slang word scab in that category so just use "non-unionized temporary replacement workers" or something similar if you want to discuss them.) And as a volunteer, it is honestly tempting to just hit delete than to take the time to try and edit inappropriate language out. 2) As a moderated site with gets reviewed only a few times each day by volunteer moderators, we often get multiple replies saying the same thing. So often a reply will get deleted if it is similar to or identical to something already posted and also in the moderation queue. 3) there are a lot of personal attacks and passive aggressive responses that are not appropriate for a young audience to view. 4) There have been a lot of posts that wander way off topic. While trying not to stifle input, it is something that is annoying and that we try to reign in. 5) Some topics are like politics and religion and no matter what you do, it's going to start an argument. I personally cringe every time I see a new post about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, about poor paint jobs, or about foreign built Canadian ships. All of these have been argued to death over the years on these forums, Yet whenever they re-appear they elicit strong reactions. I cringe, but I approve them (provided they are civil) knowing the next few days will need closer moderation. A good argument is one thing, but attacking or belittling others is something else. And finally 6) At least with this old forum's software, approval and deletion are just one click away. So sometimes we just hit the wrong button, with no way to undo that action.

Please don't take any deletion or editing personally. We do what we can to keep this a G rated site appropriate for everyone, while still trying to avoid spending so much time on this site that the balance of the rest of our lives is impacted.

I posted a reply yesterday on the new forum to the question related to why nobody is posting. My response was not approved for some reason as my message has not posted.

Oh yeah. That one didn't like pro-worker-union posts of mine. Didn't jib with his personal agenda.

Used to have one in particular - guess he knew more than then the person answering a question. I just don't get into discussions much anymore....

My personal opinion is that certain moderators take their job VERY seriously, to the point of censorship, for what reason I do not know. I say this as a site moderator myself...not this site obviously.

Have to have patience. There has been so much negative feedback with the move, a couple of people working on the project abandoned it. These are people that work full time jobs and do this in their spare time. So the process has been slowed even more.

The new forums look fine...I'm just not sure they're functioning properly.

I have made two successful posts on the new forums and several (3 or 4) that have gone nowhere. I posted a reply to my own Sturgeon Bay Activity post...is sat Awaiting Moderation, or words to that effect, then disappeared. I assume it was deemed inappropriate.

I have since posted a few times...the last one registered and logged in...and they haven't posted. More recent posts have happened.

Is there a problem with the forum? New posts not displaying proprely for moderation?
