Joyce L & g Lakes trader, has made 3 loads = 118,000, if loaded to capacity, since some say there are restrictions right now, the 118,000 added on to the amount below., means these boats are hauling a lot. my Log started when boats came out of Bayship, around 3/10 - 12, I do not know of the loads that might of been at the end of last season.. which your tot's include. interesting. I am off around 100K Could be a boat I dont follow ? so not recorded.

Indy + B H, has had approx. 563 K tons so far, having fun with numbers, I know there are load restrictions for every body, the sills at the locks. I went with the capacity in a perfect world.

whoops I forgot to mention the munson, but her tot was included.....

My Waiting for Spring Log: shows, Rogerr Blough 1 load, (split? BH & Gary)
Block has had 4 loads,I didn't differentiate BH or Indy
Sykes, 4 loads w/5 en-route, again didnt diff.
Burns Harbor - one ld for B H
PRT - 2 . B H (?) didnt diff.
Oberstar- 3 -- ld'g the 4th

I stand corrected regarding the Ryerson's 5 year. Sheesh, it just seems like yesterday that she was out. Of course, it also seems like just yesterday that the Agawa Canyon and Manitoulin were running as well... I digress.

US Steel does not have any mines on the Marquette Range, they have contracted with Canadian National Railroad to have some E-Rail trains haul Taconite pellets from Minntac to the dock at Escanaba. So far three trains have been operated (these are 1.5 times the size of normal trains to Two Harbors). There will be another train tonight or tomorrow departing from Minntac. They have also diverted one trainload of pellets from Keetac originally destined for Granite City and had it delivered to Gary. The pellets onboard the Calloway and Munson, plus the pellets from Ecorse, should be enough to keep Gary running for awhile, albeit at a reduced rate.

The Block has taken a few loads into Burns Harbor this season and in fact, her AIS shows her with an ETA of April 8 at 1300 going to Burns Harbor. Paul R. Tregurtha has also unloaded a cargo or two in Burns Harbor as well this season. I don't know if the Sykes has unloaded in Burns Harbor this year or not?

Toledo is one that I don't believe has received much ore at least for the start of the 2014 season. So far they've gotten one from the Thunder Bay of CSL but, nothing I don't think has come from the upper lakes. Okay maybe they might have gotten a few from the Great Lakes Trader but, wasn't that back in like say January or in February? I know the Trader has been taking loads down to Cleveland this winter from Escanaba.

ABC News reported tonight that USSteel started back up in Gary (not that their sources are better than Boatnerd). Sykes and Block are indirectly owned by Mittal Steel.

Burns Harbor and Indy,have had no advertised problem. Have received, some 15 Loads or so, some by one or two of the larger boats. I am not pitting one steel firm against the other, just apparent facts. ArcelorMittal didnt seem to have the same experience. Is this just U S Steel's exclusively?
This info page had a posted question or solution, that The Sykes and Block, share their loads with U S Steel, are they not AlcelorMittal boats?, or at least under contract to the A M Company?

The situation is that they are out of ore.Once they start getting ore things will get back to normal.So why would
you think the Blough and Speer would lay up they'll be busy all season hauling ore there and to Conneaut.

The inventory crisis doesn't end immediately after the ice clears. It will take a while to replenish stockpiles so this isn't repeated. The fact remains that many cargo 'opportunities' have been lost already so the shipping companies will have to scramble to make them up before the end of the season

Let's face facts. If things remain backlogged, ASC might think about bring the Acorn out for a while. That would be it. The Ryerson is 99% certain done sailing as a straight decker, and those old Oglebay steamers are 100% certain done as self propelled vessels.

Seems to me that the shipping companies have there future needs in focus..Wonder if contracts are being redefined as to up the rates depending on supply and demand.Mother nature can cause as much fluctuation in the economy as finance. As stated before with a very slow recovery under way The steel companies are probably adjusting there production based on cash flow and return on investment I know my steel stocks are flat and my logistic stocks are fluctuating.Sometimes it's not smart to invest in your hobby although it's fun to see the real world work..

When I sailed on the lakes you would fit out @ 15 Apr and layup @15 Dec. They always want 1 million tons of ore on the dock in Gary to carry them over the winter. Maybe they are just pushing Mother Nature a little too much.

Shipwatcher1 the Boland is scheduled to be out and sailing in the 2014 shipping season. From the list of ships that ASC has down for the 2014 as sailing, the Boland is schedule to leave lay-up in late April sometime to begin her season this year. Hope this helps.

Last winter, many of the boats laid up early due to the ice and weather. This resulted in lost cargo deliveries. The delays incurred this spring and the further delays yet to come, create a huge backlog of undelivered cargos. It remains to be seen if this is enough to require the Ryerson but it is a clear possibility. She would require a five year or at least an extension from the Coast Guard. Last time she sailed was spring of 2009.
