Birchglen beached. Sad picture. Would like to see Selim Sam's version showing whole ship...even though that would be another sad picture.

Did anyone get a photo of this sad time as I remember her fondly as Canada Marquis and was there at the start of her career and would like to see the end>

I believe both vessels at one point this year were on the Havre St. Pierre to Sorel Ore run and I would expect that next season, CSL may be using them again on this run with an occasional trip into the lakes. Pineglen is laid-up in Toronto and hopefully she will be back sailing again next season as she had lots of work put into her this year. Cedarglen is laid-up in Goderich since early June and no word yet as to if she will return this season or what her future holds at this point? Hope this helps.
Thanks for the information Denny. After I asked about Oakglen I did remember about the talk from a few weeks ago in another thread about her and the other CSL streight deck vessels . I sure hope the Pineglen and Cedarglen do in fact return to service eaither this season or next season.

Thanks so much for the information. Hopefully she won't need to be on the hook for to long. I'm sure her crew is ready to get off her and head home to be with there families or onto there next boat. Just curious has there been any news on Oakglen? Is she expected to make this one way trip like Birchglen and Mapleglen or is CSL holding onto her abit longer? Thanks again for the information.

The Mapleglen is just off the southern coast of Greese should arrive in Aliaga in two days I was told she might be on the hook for a bit before being beached but nobody really knows for certain

Looks like the Nelvana. She was a Panamax self unloader with pontoon hatches.

Did a Google Earth search of Aliag and you can plainly see that part where the ships are broken up.
Looks as if there is a Great Lakes self unloader being dismantled.

Talked to crew on the Mapleglen yesterday everything seems fine with the exception of the lack of stores on board the weather is also fine just a lazy role still a long way from making land another 5 or 6 days the Birchglen is just off the west coast of Italy the tip of the boot and should be in Turkey around the 17th will keep posting further updates as I get them

Absolutely the storm has already affected the trip for the Mapleglen she is anchored off the west coast of Cape Breton waiting for the storm to pass they are expected to be there for a few days yet they arrived there yesterday at around 1600 local time, the crew are doing their everyday duties as if they were still on the run in the lakes and they only have a couple of the regular crew on her that sailed as most of her original crew moved to other ships when she didn't come out this spring but everybody who was on her and were not already placed on another ship were asked to sail her to Turkey as far as them scrapping the ship on the way no I don't think lol,I will try to keep the board updated as much as I can and yes God bless the crew of the Mapleglen on her last trip fair winds and following seas and long may your big jib draw!

Just curious if anyone knows if that massive Hurricane that's about to head up the East coast of the United States will effect the Birchglen and Mapleglen on there trips to Turkey? I sure hope not and will be saying a couple extra prayers for there crews for a safe trip along with all the other crews of the maney diffrent ships that will be affected by this massive Hurricane.
One last question that I have had this week is what are the advantages of haveing these boats travel under there own power to the scrap yard versus haveing them towed? Who pays the wages of the crew who are aboard these boats and what activities might they be doing aboard? Would any scrapping be takeing place that wouldn't affect the operation like removing shelves and minor things like that? And one last question and I'm sorry for my maney questions about this but its been on my mind for along while now. The crews aboard these boats are they the same crews who would be aboard if they werent o. The one way trip to the scrap yard? Thanks so much for any and all information.

What is the rush to scrap these ships out? Aren't steel scrap prices at near all time lows right now?

algowest wrote:Agree with everyone's input on Govan's 3 salty-lakers design features. I'll also add these ships had closer frame spacing when compared to lakers, which would add to overall ship weight, reducing carrying capacity on the lakes. They had an ice belt near the waterline, to attain their Ice Class 3. Also these ships were strengthened for heavy cargoes, similar to the Fednav Lakes-capable ships of the same era.
It was permitted to load heavy cargos in hold 2,3,5 &6 the holds 1,4 & 7 being empty.
This was often used for hauling ore as it meant less of a clean up.
The bow was strengthened for ice class 3 with heavy close framing and thicker steel plating, I was not aware of he ice belt at the waterline.
