The Anderson will layup at the West Duluth ore dock, east of 6. This dock hasn't been used in years.

The steamers may have nine more years before needing to meet low-sulfur fuel requirements.

I read a 2012 article stating
"U.S. flagged Great Lakes steamships (operating exclusively on the
Great Lakes) have been exempted by the EPA through 2025"

I agree 100% with both tugboathunter and Guest's comments as the location indeed does not mean anything as far as where the Anderson lays up at and if it is long term or not? I remember back in August 2001 during the recession at that time and before the horrible events of 9/11 happened. Point is, I saw the Roger Blough at the Soo and they sent her to an early season lay-up in 2001 and she sat at I believe was Duluth from August until Spring of 2002 before she was re-activated. The Anderson I believe also went into an early season lay-up as well in 2001. So to prove what was said by both tugboathunter and Guest, location indeed does not matter as to where the Anderson or any other boat goes if they are going into long-term lay-up. Hope that this helps out in some ways here.

The Munson spent the 2013 season laid up in the Twin Ports, so I don't think the location means anything.

About 10 or 12 years ago, both Roger Blough and Arthur M. Anderson spent a whole season laid up at Fraiser Ship Yards.

I noticed on Boatnerd AIS she has a destination for Duluth Home with a eta for January 14. That makes me think she will be out in 2017. I know that boats due layup in the Duluth/Superior area for extended periods of time and long term but i haven't noticed GLF laying up and of there boats there long term for awhile now. They seem to go to Sturgeon Bay for long term. I could be wrong with this though. Just my thoughts and observation.

Also in rough shape due to hauling salt years ago.

If my memory serves me correct, the deadline for not using bunker "C" as a propulsion fuel is approaching. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was extended from 2014 to 2020. If that's true then we'll probably see all the "Triple A"s be re-powered one by one until they're done by the deadline.
I spoke to a sailor on the Clarke a few years ago and he referred to the Munson as their "Money Boat" because she had a little more capacity and could make more money per trip. I'm guessing that's why she was the first re-power. I'll also guess that the Callaway will be last due to her more recent conversion to "pilothouse control".
Just my thoughts.

I was actually quite surprised when they announced the dieselization of the Munson considering that her capacity isn't significantly higher than the AAAs and she is still equipped with the older bucket style of self-unloader. I believe it's the last unloader of that particular design. The AAAs have a much more common, efficient, and newer loop-belt style self unloader design that I figured would have made them a more practical candidate for dieselization especially since the Kaye E. Barker, another AAA, has already been converted. Although, if I recall, there was a complication with the Barker's steering mechanicals during that particular conversion that GLF would also have to address with the other AAAs. All that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Anderson converted once the dieselization project of the Munson is completed and proved out.
I believe that the Munson was chosen for repowering, because her self-unloading system uses a forward boom. See the following article for additional details (http://content.thealpenanews.com/?p=550 ... wered.html)

Perhaps just being pulled out of service with the return of the John G. Munson. Mike

Call me ignorant, but.. conversion to what?

I can't imagine the Anderson would be going into long term layup if there's no talk of Callaway or Clarke possibly getting shelved as well/instead. I get that vessels can often make more wear and tear as a result of various factors, but GLF takes care of their fleet across the board.
Probably conversion would mean to diesel.

She will be laying up in the Twin Ports

Re: Arthur M. Anderson

No, she will be going into lay up until there is demand enough to bring her out.

Their AAAs have all sat out a year at a time recently. It's probably her turn.
