It would be nice to see Algoma tip their hat to history in the regard of renaming these two vessels by leaving them as they are, but either way, hopefully they'll have a few more years with us.

I've listened to both transit the Detroit River and call-in to Sarnia Traffic on Channel 12. Even the different people on the radio pronounce them differently, which I think makes it interesting.

On a trip on the Quebecois in '97, I heard 2 ways to say it from crewmen: 3rd mate (he was from Quebec) said it as KEY-beck-wah; most of the rest of the crew had it as kreb-EK-wah

Very true. What's strange is that renaming vessels entails a fairly substantial expenditure of time and money, and these two ships likely only have a few years of sailing left. Algoma has already shown willingness to honor ULS heritage by keeping the names of the Norris and Leitch(s). One would think it would be a win win for them to keep [i]Montrealais[/i] and [i]Quebecois[/i] names as well; they'd save the money and trouble of changing the names on two vessels close to retirement, and they'd get to do that under the guise of honoring two of the finest and longest-lived Seaway-sized lakers ever built. And that's not to mention the Papachristidis heritage and all the citizens of two important St. Lawrence cities those two names are meant to honor.

Word around here was they were to be renamed Algoma Montrealais and Algoma Quebecois , but Algoma`s company newsletter ` Bear Facts ` would probably have more solid info than what we are hearing here . So you quite possibly are correct . I think I speak for most of us by saying that we`d like to see the names remain the same as they were since they were launched . But in reality they are Algoma`s now and with Algoma going in a new naming direction e.g. Algoma Mariner , Algoma Discovery etc , this is probably what will take place .

My guess is that a large majority of folks would prefer they remain [i]Montrealais[/i] and [i]Quebecois[/i].

This may have been dealt with before, but I'm wondering if Montrealais and Quebecois are to be renamed? Why I ask is I just read in Algoma's "Bear facts" publication that Montrealais is to be renamed "Algoma Montreal" and Quebecois is to be renamed "Algoma Quebec". Any definitive word on this matter? I personally hope they leave them as is!
