I believe that those two package freighters became available after being replaced on the Newfoundland route by container vessels.
The
Chimo and
Cabot had been carrying containers in the Newfoundland service on deck. Container traffic grew and in fall 1981 both vessels were modified for the carriage of more containers ondeck and below deck, but only to 100 TEU. The following year Newfoundland Steamships, Ltd., chartered the
Catalina, a dedicated container ship that had been so converted in 1970, and thus began a series of charters of container ships by the firm. The
Chimo and
Cabot were laid up at Sorel in 1982, the
Chimo running infrequently up until then, and in January 1983 Upper Lakes purchased the pair for $2.3 million.
