Thanks for sharing the info and link to the Michigan Tech explanation as well.
I spotted one of these off St. Ignace a few days ago and was surprised to see something standing so tall out of the water without being part of an ice pressure ridge. It was just a large solo chunk, drifting along, and I was thinking about how large the submerged portion had to be to support something standing that tall.
