Not the VFW the American Legion

On the Canadian side, the ferry dock was at the bottom of Brock St. not East St. The City hall stands on the Lakesformer dock site.

Did these ferries operate year-round? It must have been difficult to keep them moving with the heavy ice conditions on the St. Marys River.

On the Canadian side it ran from the foot of East Street.

When in college in the Soo in the early 80's, I was told there used to be a gas station on the SE corner of Ashmund & Water streets, right where ferry traffic would flow, and stop for long periods. The gas station owner capitalized on the stopped traffic. He installed longer hoses on his pumps so his attendants could wander the street and fill up people's gas tanks as they waited.

I'm not sure about the ferry dock locations, but the tugs were sold for use on Lake Ontario (Wolfe Island), and were towed away. One ferry took on water off Saginaw Bay (north of the Thumb of Michigan) and sank, taking the other ferry down with it via the attached towline. They sit on the bottom there, one I believe is upright and the other is inverted.

I apologize if this has been asked before, but where did the cross-border ferry between Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie Michigan dock on each side of the St. Marys River? From what I have seen from postcards before the construction of the International Bridge it looks like the ferry operated just downstream of the locks. Just wondering where it docked and was it able to take large trucks, buses, etc. in addition to automobiles? What was the disposition of this ferry once it was made redundant by the bridge?
