Thanks
Yes, the fight was over the ferry "Prince Edward Island", which had been used as a dredge pumping station. McNamara and several other companies were convicted of price fixing in dredging contracts and went out business. Some of the principals went to jail. They left quite a mess all over the place.

Mac Mckay

my understanding is Macnamara shut down late 80's after a long fight over derelict ships in the harbour - last being the Prince of wales Ferry

This below is from a Vintage Whitby facebook page:

This Day in Whitby History - Ferry Sinks in Whitby Harbour!
30 years ago, the derelict Prince Edward Island ferry boat sank in Whitby Harbour. For years the boat was tied up at the harbour, and was an eyesore for most people. The boat was also a thorn in the side of the Whitby Town Council, who were trying to have the boat removed. The boat contained several generators, and it was originally destined to become a floating generator of electricity somewhere in the Caribbean. There were accusations that the owner sank the boat, but he claimed that someone cut the ropes and it sank.

Is their anything left of the old McNamara dredging and marine construction base there? They had a major operation and built their own tugs and barges. One tug, named Whitby, is still in service for McNally - presently working in Halfax.
