When we went out to the burning vessel, there was a Canada Coast Guard vessel attending.

I remember being camped along the North Shore above Duluth and watching Mesquite returning from the scene a couple of days after the incident, through my binoculars.

Thomas W. Lamont was the first vessel on the scene. She rescued 17 members of the crew off of the Cartiercliffe Hall.

Cartiercliffe Hall, in 1979 durned at the aft end. Cabins/superstructure destroyed. Rebuilt during 1980, went on to become the Winnipeg for CSL, then Algontario for Algoma. Scrapped in 2011

The vessel you’re referring to is the Cartiercliffe Hall which later became the Winnipeg for CSL and finally the Algontario for Algoma Central Corp. and you can find answers to all your questions on her by going to the Fleet History Galleries on this website. Once in the Fleet Galleries page, scroll down to scrapped vessels. Then, look for the Algontario and click on that boat. It has articles, photos and a write up history about the devastating fire and the death of some of its crewman. Hope this helps.
