Many cargos have had major declines while there have been a few new businesses that have created cargo that's never been moved before. Others just changed modes.
Steel mills took a big hit in the 70s-80s time frame & the movement of their raw materials drastically dropped off around the lakes. Crude oil dried up when refineries shut down. Other "old economy" commodities are no longer moved either like package freight.
Grain shifted from major laker movement straight to Buffalo to a combination of lakers & salties going right past Buffalo & heading down the Seaway.
New things have been moving on the lakes that were never even thought of years ago like Windmills & large dimensional cargo like machinery & stuff like that.
