Did you see where the bridge got stuck open for over 2 hours after the Block whet thru because of the storm that went thru the area Tuesday evening

Nice picture of the Joseph L. Block. Speed limit in Duluth Harbor is 8 MPH so the Captain probably checked at the Breakwall given he was loaded and heading for the CN dock (the old DM&IR) in the west basin.

That was one of the fastest inbound passages through the Duluth Ship Canal I've ever seen. The Block often comes in a little hot (and handles it beautifully), and on top of that yesterday there was a real unusual current running into the harbor at 3 or 4 knots for a good part of the late afternoon/early evening. Not sure wether the Block's crew expected it, but they went rippin' through the canal. Earlier in the afternoon the Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. departed, probably doing whatever they consider their usual RPMs for the canal; it was one of the slowest outbound passages I've ever seen there. The aerial bridge was down behind them while the McCarthy's stern was still only halfway between the bridge and the lighthouses at the outer ends of the piers.

Given that post on the news channel about the American Century and the water level fluctuations at the Soo, I think the storm system that passed over the western lake yesterday morning might've caused a small seiche.
