Denny : Revive the Hamiltonian name ??

Re: Algoma Bear

Just a thought only but, maybe a ship named for Hamilton? Algoma does a lot of business there as far as them hauling in iron ore and delivering it to the ArcelorMittal Steel Plant there. Although Toronto has been used before in the CSL fleet hence Tarantau maybe someday have Toronto the city in Ontario for a name? Finally and YES I know the Ojibway was used in the LLT fleet but, maybe the city of Windsor, Ontario for a ship name? Add in one more possibly and Yes I know the Cuyahoga honors the river in Cleveland but what about the name Cleveland itself for the City there? Just my two cents, thoughts and ideas.

To CSLFAN, Yes I've been working very long and tiring hours on my list each and every day and night as well. In fact, I was all set up to travel to the St. Clair River this week one day. However, I stayed up too late one night and couldn't sleep thus I missed my golden opportunity this week! Then the stupid weather changed and it rained for a couple of days too. Sorry to go off subject. As for the Algoma names and the ULS prefixes and the fact that those were all "recycled names that were switched over when Algoma took the ULS fleet, Yes I am well aware of that information as one had suggested and posted here." All I was trying to do is add in what I thought IMO might have been some good choices and names for a new Algoma ship name. As I tried to make a point, CSL went back to the Baie series if you will on four of their Trillium-class ships built between 2012-2013 so I thought that maybe IMO Algoma could go with some of the names that I suggested. It was just my thoughts only on this idea!

My point is, here's some IMO anyway that I think looks good and I think they should consider using someday. Just my two cents is all on any possible new names What do you think of these?

Algoma Century for Algoma being around for more than 100 years!
I personally like this name alot and they once had Canadian Century for Canada's 100 years. ASC has the American Century for the fact of them being around for 100 years. Algoma badly IMO needs to have the Century name applied to a new build someday as that would be neat!

Algoma Pioneer for Algoma being Pioneers in the ship business and maybe to honor their past and founders in some way at least?

Algoma Venture for venturing into new shipbuilding projects etc.

Algoma Voyager for their voyage from the shipyards to Canada etc.

Algoma Leader for Algoma being a top leader in the shipping stuff etc. I personally would like to see this name added to maybe a new one.

Algoma Spirit for the Spirit of their employees and their crews
Yes I know they had a previous one but why not another one?

Algoma Ontario for the fact their operations is in Ontario and most of their business is in Ontario. I sort of like this name for a new ship.

These are just a few of the names that I think would look good and I am hoping that a few boatnerds like my name ideas and agree then.
These are all recycles of old Upper Lakes Shipping names, with the "Canadian" prefix switched out with "Algoma"

The way Algoma is run there’s a good chance the CEO”s etc wouldn’t even realize there’s a CSL Niagara, if you had to put a number on Algoma in regards to there Nautical heritage it would be zero, they could have named the Algoma Niagara the Algoma St Catherine just a thought!

My guess it is related to branding/name recognition. Algoma is the named of the company so that's what they may want people to see.

I like the idea of the name, but for some reason it doesn't quite seem to roll off the tongue like a great ship name does. I think "Algobear" would be better.

I agree about the Niagara name as I too would’ve thought the same thing with CSL having the Niagara name. However, I suppose that the name was chosen in part because of Algoma’s business etc. with the Niagara region and the fact they have their operations in St. Catharines which is in the Niagara region. A couple of their names I’m baffled on though are the Strongfield and Conveyor. I know Strongfield is some sort of a new type of wheat or something like that I thought I read once? As for the Conveyor name, I’m definitely not in favor of that nor am I a big fan of the Innovator or Intrepid names. Don’t forget too, besides the Algoma Bear being built in China they are also building one so I thought anyway in Croatia similar to the Innovator and Intrepid? I hope they choose and come up with something a bit better when they name that new vessel!

Denny,
Not nitpicking, just observing. Most of the names you suggest are old upper lakes shipping names. That being said, i agree with your point of using historical names. Why algoma sault instead of algosoo? al you have to do us look at the retired ships in the gallery i the a's and there's tons.

most people refer the "csl niagara" to the "csl viagara" id of thought algoma central could of come up with a better name, but maybe they picked it out of a cap!

The one I never understood was the Algoma Niagara, you’d think since CSL had the Niagara Algoma would find a different name.

Re: Algoma Bear

I’m not too in favor of the name, yet I fully understand and get the point though as far as the Bear as part of the Algoma logo thing. What to me don’t make much sense, CSL went back to its roots when they had the Trillium-class ships built in China such as Baie St. Paul, Thunder Bay and Whitefish Bay. So far, Algoma has used the Captain Henry Jackman on one of its new ships. My point is, CSL chose a few old names for their new ships yet Algoma doesn’t seem to want to use much of their old names on their new ships. I’m surprised to not see the Navigator name used again or the Montrealais or Quebecois names. To me Montreal would at least honor the city of Montreal and Quebec the province. Also, why not have a ship named the Algoma Century since Algoma has been around for more than 100 or more years! I could see the Progress as a name they once held and could use as far as progress in the fact of them building new ships and making progress. Just my two cents on all this.

Anyone know about the name for a new Algoma self-unloader - Algoma Bear - due into service Spring 2024? Apparently this release of information goes back to around May 3, but I just heard about the name. Comments?
