MacArthur Lock Future

by Guest » January 11, 2023, 8:40 am

I recall reading somewhere that when the new lock opens at Sault Ste. Marie, the Poe Lock was to be closed temporarily for repairs/upgrades. After the Poe Lock reopens, what will be the future of the MacArthur Lock? It is now reaching 80 years old and by the time the other two locks are operational simultaneously it will be nearing 100 years of age. Since the other two locks will be able to handle any realistic traffic levels at that time, will the MacArthur Lock be idled much like the Sabin and Davis locks were and possibly used only for occasional recreational/tour boat traffic? Given this, I could see the MacArthur Lock being decommissioned at some point after the new lock is operational. Or am I getting this wrong and only one of the larger locks will be in operation at any given time with the other in reserve?
