TW, I heard this in the early-mid 90's when I started with the Mather, from a crewmember. I saw the TV show about 10 years ago. The Carnahan left the lakes in 86 for the orient, so the timeline seems right. I would guess by now she's probably gone, or maybe a barge. I've wheeled, been on and seen lots of T-2's in my time and wouldn't be surprised if it, and others, were still around in some form or use.

When was the last time you heard about her possibly still being around?

Interesting the Paul H. Carnahan was mentioned. I had heard from someone familiar with ocean and lake ships that she was actually in service, of some kind, on the Yangtze River. Whether it had anything to do with her power plant, being an ex-T2 turbo-electric tanker, I'm not sure. Somewhere on a past TV show, they were doing a pictoral on that river, and, lo and behold, in the background was a ship matching her silhouette.

Thanks for bringing up the cliffs victory. I remembered a unique ships profile but couldn't remember her name. Very cool look. I remembered my uncle saying how fast she was!

Have any aerial ocean sightings of the barge formerly carferry Pere Marquetts 22 been made recently. Does it even exist anymore? It seems that it has been several years since any new news of that hull has appeared. Thanks!

Algocen was sold ostensibly for scrap and used as a spoils barge before being returned to the lakes as J.W. Shelley.

Heard the Ciffs Victory was used for storage for awhile,after it was towed overseas.

Quite a few of the old lakers that were sold to be scrapped overseas in the 80's, never survived the voyage. Several are on the bottom of the Atlantic.

Most, or all lakers, are not suitable for ocean trade, there are some salties destined for scrap that have been resold for further use for ocean trade, A friend of mine in Aliaga, Turkey, reports these finding to Lloyds Of London, When Canadian lakers are completely scrapped, a certificate is sent from the scrappers to the prior owning company i.e. Halifax, C S L.

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. Has a selfunloader or parts there of been used overseas ? Given there uniqueness, I was thinking someone might have found a use once the ship got to the scrap yard. Maybe the new owner could sell the boat for more than scrap value .

Are there any lakers that were towed overseas for scrap but weren't actually scrapped and are still around today?
