I don't know if this will be of any help, but if you'd like to have something in hand to study, you might try to locate a model of a hospital ship made by Revell models. This is a plastic, authentic scale model with a 2-piece hull and was available as the USS Repose (AH-16?), and the most current issue as the SS Hope, (formerly the Sanctuary?, AH-?). The ships and the model are based on, I believe, a C4-S-B2 MARAD configuration, with an added helo deck on the stern. I am currently converting one to the Joseph H. Thompson. Previously I have done the Paul H. Carnahan from Revell's T-2 Mission Capistrano tanker model, as well as the Cliffs Victory from their VC2-S-AP5 Montrose/Haskell Victory hull amphib transport model. I did the conversions much the same way the shipyards did the real things.
