Also, the vessels are saluting the mail service to acknowledg that the vessel is finished with the transaction and is clear of the larger vessel that the mailboat has just supplied. Maybe this is just used in this situation rather than the longer formal salute

3L/2S is the formal version of the salute. 1L/2S is the more commonly used version.

I live in Windsor Ontario, a few blocks from the Detroit River, every day and night I hear the distinctive sound of the horns on the river, always the same.

A single long note followed by two short ones. I wanted to know what it meant so I looked around, one site names it the "Master Salute" but from videos I've seen on youtube I thought that was supposed to be three long notes and two short ones.
