The light is now reopened to the public. As part of a 6 million dollar renovation and consolidation of Coast Guard Station Buffalo. Fencing has been added to separate the property and once again allow public access to Lighthouse Point. A new sidewalk has been added with benches and picnic facilities to follow soon.

Since September 11, 2001 Lighthouse Point has been closed to the public, due to security concerns caused by it's proximity to the Buffalo Coast Guard station. Bidding has been completed and a contractor selected to build a security fence to correct this concern. It is projected that the land will be returned to the public, and the self guided tour leading to the base of the Buffalo Main Light will reopen in the coming months.
