The first *Patricia Hoey* was built 1951 at New Orleans by Alexander SYsInc as *Messenger* for Suderman & Young Towing CoInc., Houston. She became *Patricia Hoey* in 1984, then *New Hampshire,*Sachem,* *Sea Tractor,* and *Shark.* When Florida Marine Terminal, Inc., came into difficulty she was laid up at Miami and was dropped from documentation on 31 August 2006.

The second *Patricia Hoey* was built 1949 by Alexander for Barworth Corp., Houston, as *Propeller.* She became Gaelic's *Bantry Bay* in 1982 and *Patricia Hoey* in 1991.

The present *Carolyn Hoey* (built 1951 as *Atlas* by Alexander for Barworth and sister of the *Propeller*) also has a 360-degree pilothouse.

There are both, and indeed Great Lakes did own New Hampshire. I did not realize there were 2 Hoeys though. I am not sure on the history of the Messenger version. The only tug named messenger I know a bit about was opperated by the Coast Gaurd but they aquired that tug prior to 1951, and opperated for nealy 40 years.

OK, so the photo link posted by tark9m is the current Patricia Hoey, nee Propeller?
The MHSD calendar says the old Patricia Hoey was built in 1951 as the Messenger; purchased, reconstructed, repowered, and renamed Patricia Hoey by Gaelic in 1984; sold and renamed New Hampshire (I assume by Great Lakes Towing) in 1990 and Shark in 2000; currently in Fort Lauderdale.

The current Patricia Hoey is the old Propeller and the old Patricia Hoey was the Messenger. 2 different tugs but the same name. The current Patricia Hoey was the Bantry Bay I believe when that patricia hoey was in toledo.

Hoey's original wheelhouse was conventional. That one is part of the refit. I am not aware of any other tugs on the lakes running that configuration, but it is a very common design for modern tugs. Many tugs working the major seaport have that design.

Another great photo for May in the Marine Historical Society of Detroit calendar, this one showing the Patricia Hoey towing the A.S. Glossbrenner in 1986. The Hoey was built in 1951 and rebuilt in 1984. She has a pilot house with glass all around and above, almost like a greenhouse. Was this pilot house original, or was it changed in '84? It must provide great visibility but I'd think it would be pretty warm in summer. Are there any other tugs on the Lakes with a similar pilot house? Thanks!
