Hi -
I am wondering how one can go about finding records for sailors who were licensed under the Dept of Commerce (predecessor to the USCG). My grandfather sailed back in 1937-1939 (so far, that's what we've found for certification) as a cook, then as a wiper and coal passer. It is believed he sailed on the Pittsburgh Fleet before joining the Army - mom can't find the record book where every vessel he served on is listed.
Also, I talked to her about donating his licensures/pics/etc to a museum - she seemed open to it, so I'm hoping it can be preserved by a historical society.
Thanks -
Ryan
