All slope surfaces are covered with zero abrasive ultra slippery Teflon plates. Cargo hold bulkheads and deck heads receive a anti-corrosion coating, however these coating don't get reapplied too often (maybe never in most cases).

Ive seen the bulkheads painted, but never the tank tops. I think that there is just too much abrasion for paint to stay for very long

Are the tank tops, bulkheads and other hold surfaces coated for protection when a vessel like the Salarium was prepared for carrying corrosive cargoes like salt, or are they merely primed and painted, with deterioration assumed?

Nanticoke (now Salarium) has had a lot of work done before starting the salt trade. Over the course of 2 layups in 2007 and 2008, the complete tanktop was replaced, and all framing and supports replaced in the tunnel. I'm sure that she has been maintained well and will last a long time and will carry many many more loads of salt yet to come!

Sorry, you're absolutely right, I checked her photo gallery history page and quickly scanned it to see before posting that and mistook her refit during the 1998/1999 winter lay-up as marking the start of her charter to them. More careful reading shows that it started back in 1982.

So I'd say that the Saunière fared pretty well on this job then.

She still lasted 10 years on that assignment.

Barring potential major reinvestment in the Salarium and with how CSL's replacement program is going, I'd think she would be extremely fortunate to last another 10 years.

If we are talking about the Salarium, the tank top work was more than likely due to her new role of carrying salt loads. She ended up taking over the salt runs from the Sauniere after she left the lakes and was eventually scrapped. I hope that the Salarium fares better than the Sauniere did and that the salt loads don't destroy and ruin her cargo holds the way it did on the Sauniere.

It was in a CSL World publication a few years ago I think where they were replacing the top of the ship (tank top I guess), and applying coatings.

Do you mean her tank top? If they've done a lot of internal work I'm not aware of, it certainly paints things in a different light.

But it still seems like an expensive investment in 2013 for a Canadian fleet on a vessel that is fast approaching her 35th birthday with substantially her original forebody.

I wonder if she just might get a new forebody then in a few years. The financial equation obviously changed with the lifting of the import tariffs that made it advantageous to recycle the stern of a vessel.

But perhaps with the right candidate, there's still significant enough savings there that we could see another vessel follow the Algobay and the planned Algoport project over in China by recycling the stern of an existing vessel.

She had her whole top replaced in the past few years... And if they do new forebodies (which I'm praying for), the Salarium/Atlantic Erie/Superior can make it to Chengxi (where they would be rebuilt) under their own power.

It would be the Salarium as she has the medium speeds. They won't be swapping a slow speed for medium speeds. She has a long term contract that has to be fulfilled and she will need good engines going forward.

Project focus is replacing Crossley Pielsticks with new engine and Salarium has these engines along with other 4 ships mentionned. Perhaps they put new engine in her now and then replace forebody after salt contract is done.

The Tadoussac would be my guess as well. I suppose Frontenac is possible as well, but that hull is from the mid 60's and has seen no major work.

Why would the Salarium be considered? Judging by her days now of carrying salt to Eastern Canadian ports, I would think that this has got to be taking its toll on the hull shouldn't it? If the Salarium continues to carry lots of salt for CSL's customers, I would think that in time the hull will get pretty ripe especially working in the saltwater of the Atlantic.
