Wm A. Irvin had the same Visual aids, and she came out in the 30s.

Sorry if I don't use the correct ship nomenclature: Those are openings (cut outs) in the solid railing. They allow the captain and crew inside the pilot house to have some visibility of anyone working on the forecastle deck. If the cut outs weren't there, the solid railing would block the view forward and downward. Photo source: Reddit "CubistHamster"

What are the three sidewise rectangles directly under the front Pilot House windows on the very nice photo of the Munson that is the lead on the Boatnerd website today?
