In following and tracking Matt Miner’s Foreign Vessel Reports list daily for the 2025 Shipping Season, it seems to me IMO at least anyway that there’s a frenzy and a ton of saltwater vessels or salties here on the Great Lakes and the Seaway with plenty more yet to come before the Seaway closes up then later in either late December or January. At last check yesterday, I counted more than 50 salties either in here now, on their way out or soon to arrive here in the Lakes and Seaway. Fednav alone has well over a dozen or more of their ships either here on the Lakes and Seaway or heading out or soon to be arriving then. What is causing the surge in the Saltwater and Foreign Ships here lately? I assume as is normally the case, it’s the Fall Grain Rush as it would appear that the Grain business for 2025 must really be good as up in Thunder Bay, Ontario they’ve been busy with Salties as has Duluth-Superior along with Hamilton, Windsor, Toledo and Goderich. I’m sure it’s been this busy before but, in more than 30 years of tracking the Salties I don’t recall ever seeing it this busy before! Am I missing something here or are things just normal and busy for this time of year? Thanks for any info on this.
