The St. Lawrence Seaway closes for the season on December 29 and the Welland Canal closes for the season on December 30. The Soo Locks close on January 15. That being said, some routes that do not require lock passage continue to be served. Taconite is often still shipped from Escanaba as long as ice conditions permit and demand is present, for example. Another is fuel tankers to Soo Canada, and there are other examples.
