Pete the Whistle is crushed underneath the stack in 240ft of water. I'm assuming that a stack would weigh in at close to 2 tons if not more and we did not physically see the whistle itself. If the whistle did survive the crushing, then I'd consider lifting the stack off of it. The whistle looks to be about 5 feet long and a diameter close to a foot in the photos. I'll post them tomorrow. Thanks for the advice, I went to one a couple years ago and loved it. Didn't know they made videos. As I said below, shipwreck whistles tend to blow up!

Can you measure the diameter & length of the bell & post it here? There are numerous youtube recordings ou there. Look up the Saint Claire Whistles on the Waterfront video from 2015. They describe each of the whistles before being blown. If you find something similar, you'll get an idea on how yours would have sounded. If your computer has access to a sub-woofer, it'll help with reproducing the lower frequencies of these larger whistles.

Guest, do you have recordings or pictures of the Gilchrist whistle? Last year I found the sister ship of the Gilchrist, R.E. Schuck now known as the Hydrus and her whistle is crushed under the stack. I was wondering what she would have sounded like...

I have a whistle off the Frank W. Gilchrest later retired as the Mantadoc. very much want to get more, just quite difficult to find and afford when they come available.

A few friends of mine own and operate steamship whistles off the old lumber hookers and wooden steamers. A few own whistles from famous steamers such as the Tashmoo and City Of Detroit/ Buffalo. Divers recovered the big steam whistle off the Iron Chief out of Port Hope and restored it to working order... Or so they thought. When hooked up to the steam machine the micro cracks at the base ofvthe whistle opened up and exploded iron everywhere. Luckily no one was hurt and the whistle was again restored, but not to operation.

Don't need a big compressor. Just a large volume tank that's filled by an "average" compressor. Not like you'll be blowing the horn for minutes on end anyway. Can't piss off my neighbors too much.

You must have a very large Air Compressor with lots of Volume to here just one of them TOOT! mn brett

How many of you out there have one or more horns or whistles from ships of the Great Lakes & beyond ?

I have a Tyfon 300DVE, Tyfon 425DVE, and an Airchime 165 in my archives, all functional, or soon to be. I have several small & medium sized whistles, but none confirmed from a ship.

Just curious to know how many nuts like me are out there, and how many ship whistles & horns have survived.
