Its been showing up on both the Boatnerd AIS and Marine Traffic (when in radio range). Here is a screenshot from the Boatnerd automated vessel passage page, showing when it has shown up at certain ports that are monitored.

Re: St. Marys River Closed March 28, 2024

How big is the Mud Lake Junction light? I tried to find a picture of it, but no luck. Was it just a casualty of the ship losing power, or is it large enough to actually cause damage if struck? This site (link below) states that it is about 12 m in diameter, with the light mounted roughly 15 m above...

St. Marys River Closed March 28, 2024

The St. Marys River is currently closed from 9 Mile Point to Point Aux Frenes due to a "marine casualty to a commercial vessel". AIS show the American Mariner out of the channel in the area. It was headed upbound before crossing over the downbound channel. The Purvis tugs W I Scott Purvis ...

Per VesselFinder, it looks like they stopped briefly in Papeete, Tahiti. Probably for bunkers and/or supplies.

Re: Northern Venture

The vessel was either built with or later equipped with (early in its career) a single point loading system. I haven't seen many details of this, but it appears to have some sort of hopper on deck that feeds the four cargo holds via shuttle booms. It also had a self unloading system, that McKeil rev...

The Bowling Green Historical Collections of the Great Lakes website mentions that the MV Arctic suffered a crankcase explosion at some point in its career. It was in the eastern Atlantic when it happened.

Two were built circa 1912 for the Canadian Pacific to unload coal at Fort William, Ont (now Thunder Bay). If this link works, here is a facebook post with several photos of them: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2684568 ... 243481849/

The November 1964 edition of the Telescope had a four page article about the Grand Haven by Bill Worden and is available online here: https://images.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/121984/page/4?n= It includes details about the truck ferry route, but keep in mind it was written while the route was...

I believe so. Information and videos of the construction activity can be found here: https://algoma.com/sustainability/ Scheduled for EAF startup (in phases) at the end of 2024 or early 2025, with the blast furnace scheduled to be phased out by the end of 2026. I think that matches the originally an...

Re: Scrap Values vs Cost

BrassTack Towing costs can certainly add up, but I think another element that offsets scrap value is "undesired" materials on the vessel. Asbestos is a major one, requiring specially trained and equipped crews to properly remove. Residual fuel, oils and lubricants are often not usable and ...

It is likely that all those commercial mapping sites are using aerial views that are several years old. However most don't tell you that. They usually display a copyright date, but not the actual image date. Google Earth is an exception, where they do show the actual date the image was taken (provid...

Interesting. Could it be possible that they want both in the same port for layup purposes or to transfer to a new owner? The Coast Pilot shows the CSX swing bridge has clearances of 143 feet on the left side of the swing span and 145 feet on the right side.

The Wheeling and Lake Erie bridge (further upstream) has 134 feet of clearance on each side of the swing span.

Re: Escanaba Ore Dock

Per Patrick Dorin's book "Great Lakes Ore Docks and Ore Cars" timber gravity dock #6 was built in 1903 with 80,000 ton storage capacity, 70 feet high, 1920 feet long and 320 pockets. Rebuilt in 1924 and used until 1969. The new (current) low level ship loader dock used the foundation of th...
