Re: Masts on boats

A double reasoning of aesthetics and the positioning of navigation lights. The larger the boat, typically the higher the lights had to be from the deck and the separation of such lights to indicate the vessel's length and what type it was.

Re: Wreck of the Zealand 1880

No the Zealand has not been found at all. The hull that was discovered in 1899 was not that of the Zealand. Jim Kennard believes that the Zealand lies in depths greater that 500ft. It's likely that salvagers found a schooner (RH Rae) and mistaken the hull as a steamer due to the schooners unique mac...

Re: Whalebacks

Appreciate the information Jared...... Here's a goofy question for you---with several variables involved of course..... How did the whalebacks fair as they went under and hit the bottom compared to a conventionally shaped hull ?? More or less hull fractures etc, etc..... does that make sense ?? In ...

Re: Whalebacks

Appreciate that Jared. I thought maybe they used the same winches for docking--but didn't seem right. So when they released the anchors-- just let them slide down the hull ?? You ever dive a whaleback ?? Yes they would let the anchor slide down the hull, they had a sacrificial rope on some of them ...

Re: Whalebacks

The coal bunker is the last hatch closest to the stern superstructure. On some whalebacks, the hatch was raised 4-6ft off the spar deck. On later conversions it was flush with the spar deck. The anchor windlass was housed in the forward turret and there were winches to set the flukes of the anchor w...

Re: USCGC Mesquite

There is plenty of blame to go around and the Capt stood Court Martial. It should be pointed out however that Mesquite was covering buoy retrieval for the Sundew which was under going maintenance in a dangerous shoal area they had never worked before. GPS was unavailable, LORAN inaccurate and it wa...

Re: dunn paper company, port huron

I don't recall ever seeing anything about the Dunn Paper Company receiving coal shipments at its Port Huron plant, they may have at one time. The only marine traffic I have ever seen mentioned in relation to this company was a few visits by some saltwater vessels during the early Seaway era to load...

Re: Wreck of the Simcoe 1880

Thanks for the update! Has the Eclipse been found? I know she went aground in the area but I thought she was atomized on shore by the storm. No, the Eclipse went down in deep water. I'm guessing from the one survivor's story in 2 different newspapers that she was some 8 miles off shore when she fou...

Re: Wreck of the Simcoe 1880

The wreck has not been discovered yet. I took a crack at it in 2018 and 2019 with a permit. Depths were 200-360ft of water. Simcoe, Eclipse, and Salvor are in the same area. I took what information I had known about her course and where the Emerald had seen her go down and picked up survivors and ma...

Re: Why the fascination with the Edmond Fitzgerald?

Frankly I'm so tired of hearing about the Fitzgerald, but I understand the interest of people that are just discovering it. Everything that can be said has been, just raking over the same ground over and over again. As a counterpoint to the mystery surrounding the Fitz there is the exact opposite o...

Re: Why the fascination with the Edmond Fitzgerald?

There a few reasons, 1. She was the most recent loss on the lakes. The taking off all hands on a ship that was considered one of the best equipped on the lakes. 2. The immediate battle between the Coast Guard and the Lake Carrier's association over the causes and the widespread (for the time) media ...

Re: Sad!

I think there are a couple more factors dealing with the closing of the Maritime Center than a declining hobby. First and foremost one of the things working against the AV center was the lack of promotion outside of the area. I'd have friends come up from Detroit or out of state that had visited Por...

Re: Warship 25

Aren't these the same class of warships the US Navy is retiring rather early with only about 10-13 years of service due to operation shortfalls and other issues? If so, why hasn't construction stopped? The newer Freedom class ships built after the USS Little Rock had their issues mostly resolved wi...

Re: Loose Keel

I have both found any documentation on "modern" ships. However, about a dozen schooners were lost when their false keel came lose or they lost one of their major keel stems either bow or stern. The keel is hard to lose as most of the frames are attached to it.
