Re: Future lakers built in SB

Perhaps Algoma Central could look at SB to build new boats?

They cancelled orders at Croatian shipyard.

Would they consider SB?

While they are American, I would however, like to see lake boats built on the lakes.

Re: Museum Ships

The main issue with museum ships that they lose their novelty after a short period. One of the few success stories is the HMCS Haida that was in Toronto. Now she's in Hamilton, thank god. It was saved intially from scrapping by a few veterans and enthusiasts put in as an attraction at a, now defunct...

Re: future Passages

The Marine Traffic App is also great to track ships' passage and also uses AIS. While on the topic of apps. I have always thought that Boatnerd.com should have an app. Like many other apps that people pay to download, this wonderful website and community could raise funds by having one. Users could ...

Commercial Traffic

Crazy question,

When and what commercial traffic used the Trent-Severn and Rideau Canal waterways?

I know there is still some commercial traffic that uses the Erie Canal.

Thanks in advance,

M

Re: Stannard Rock

That article is amazing!

What I wouldn't give to see this abandoned outpost.

It illustrates that lighthouse keepers are, in their own way, mariners. They faced as many challenges as seagoing mariners.

Thank you for posting this article,

Stannard Rock

I'd like to know if one can visit this lighthouse or is it strictly a navigation aid now?

I read an interesting article about it and would love to visit it.

The reason I have posted in this forum is because the Lighthouse Forum gets very little traffic on it.

Thanks in advance,

Keweenaw Waterway

Do ships still use this waterway? What is the maximum length, height and draft this canal handle?

It looks like something I would love to kayak and ship watch - unlike the St. Clair where I prefer to be on shore. The current is too dangerous for the kayak.

Thanks,

M.

Last Ships To Use Third Welland Canal

Does anybody know what were the last ships to use the Third Welland Canal? Or, where I could find this out? Are there any of these ships still in use? Museums? Laid up? My grandfather and great uncle transited the Third Welland Canal when they immigrated to Canada. I'm truly eager to find out as muc...

Transport Canada's website indicates this ship was the first iron steamship built in Canada in Montreal. I cannot find any information on this ship. Did she ply the Great Lakes? What became of her? The only information, other than TC's website, is information on British ships. Thanks in advance, M.

Re: New Soo Lock

Thank you for all the replies.

My question is now:

Why don't we ( Canadians ) put a lock in to accommodate these vessels? I love the relationship our two nations have and with this - could we not assist with another lock?

Re: New Soo Lock

Where could I find pictures of these locks being used last?

What was the last ship to use the Canadian lock before the collapse?

Re: New Soo Lock

The MacArthur Lock would not be affected by the construction of the new lock - if it's ever built. I'm not convinced it will be built - while the administration, area senators and congress officials want it built, Congress holds the purse strings and there is no guarantee if they will provide fundi...

Re: New Soo Lock

I would have loved to have seen the Davis lock working when it was back in action not too long ago. It's too bad that they won't use it in some sort of capacity when there's a back up at the other two operational locks.

Thank you Denny and, Happy Independence Day to our American Brothers and Sisters. The best part about being Canadian is having amazing next door neigbours :) I always ask the same question whenever I'm in the U.S: Do you know what the true difference between us? Neither do I. We're the same people :)

Third Welland Canal videos

Earlier this year I requested if anyone had pictures of the third Welland Canal in operation. I received links for this. Thank you. However, does anyone have links to video of the third Welland Canal in operation? I ask this as my very late grand father, like many immigrants, transited the third Wel...

Will they keep the MacArthur lock running should they build another Poe-sized lock?

I ask as this because the amount of tonnage would increase and less waits on the St. Mary's River.

Thanks in advance,

Re: WW-II aircraft carrier Wolverine

This is truly a part of history that seems to be forgotten.

I would love to see more literature and pictures of this carrier that trained so many people to serve the war effort.

This coming from a Canadian :)

Third Welland Canal

Whilst my family and in-laws attempted to incarcerate us all at Great Wolf Lodge - my nephew attempted and succeeded with a " jail break " to go see the Welland Canal drained. This was a lot of fun for us. " This is my kind of water park " he proclaimed. However, what really caug...
