Sykes left Duluth this afternoon and every clamp was in place. The Clark the other day had corner clamps and every other clamp on the sides of the hatchs.

Saw the Clark leaving Superior entrance this afternoon, down to her marks, but not all clamps on... Is this normal or at Captains discretion?

Maybe because the conclusions were made by people who never actually sailed on the boats. They may have been with the Coast Guard or some other maritime activity but not on the boats of the Great Lakes.

The line tenders are put ashore well before the locks, on the approach piers. It wouldn’t make sense to then switch sides once in the lock. When you made the approach into the 4th Lock (Davis?) upbound the deckhands were landed on the Canadian side of the lock, still in the United States, just the C...

I started sailing the lakes in the 50s and left for deep sea in the early 70s. the rule at that time was you aways moored for transiting the locks with lines on the American side of the locks !

Back in those days you had three deckhands, a bos,n , watchman and a deckwatch and one man to each hatch so that no clamps were missed. On the boats I was on all clamps were on before we left the piers...
