To clarify, she was moved across the La Farge berth, not across the river. The berth is just wide enough for the 2 boats to sit side by side. The boats essentially switched places. There is dredging going on in the river near La Farge right now to remove PCB's.

I guess I never thought of it that way. When I was on, the engine crew used it a lot for whatever they needed done. It would make sense that they'd need something to open the hatches in case the pumps would fail.

I just uploaded the photos I took to the "Viking" thread. The Donner is the one that's used as a barge on the South side of the river, East of the Ogden St. Bridge, correct?

Sorry it took so long. I was in Marquette this weekend and stopped to take pictures of the progress. I'm hoping to shoot up over the next couple weeks and update on progress.

While in Menominee taking pictures of the Viking barge conversion, I noticed several pilothouses scattered around the Eastern end of the K&K complex. Does anyone have any ideas where they may have come from?

Most, if not all of the Interlake boats have shipboard WiFi powered by Verizon, if I remember correctly. I know that the internet comes and goes with the cell coverage, so out on the open lake, we didn't have it. In addition Direct TV was also available to crew in the mess and individual rooms.

This is a photo of one of the stacker/reclaimers at Burns Harbor. We (S.J. Cort) discharge the taconite into the dockside hopper, then through a system of belts, the ore is brought to and stacked by the stacker. When ore is needed in the plant, the wheel at the end "reclaims" it from the pile.

The US Navy had a salvage tug named the U.S.S. Favorite that was retired after WWI, is that the same tug that was used on the lakes or are these two separate tugs? Also does anyone have a side profile picture of her?

Tom McMullen replaced Thibideau as primary captain on the Cort a few years back when Thibideau retired.

As of 2 weeks ago, McMullen was still on the Cort. Last I saw Tom Ochs was 3 years ago on the Lee A.

The Algosoo spent the night anchored just off the canal in Lake Michigan. She made her way through the canal this morning, passing through the Michigan St bridge around 8:30.

I believe deck crew on the Burns Harbor are reporting the morning of the 18th. In addition, the engine and galley crew are aboard the Cort with the deck crew reporting for 0800 on Tuesday morning. Rough estimations of Thursday evening or Friday morning on a departure for them.

It's very reassuring to see my young son so interested in the ships. He's 5 years old and can pick out the boat daddy sailed on. He is fascinated with the ships, as I was when I was his age.
