On this day in 2000, there were 51 salt water ships on the Great Lakes, most of which were large bulkers, some geared, some not. Today there are only 18, most of which being tankers or smaller geared bulkers. What has caused the decrease is salt water traffic?

It looks like the self unloading boom off the now scrapped Joseph H. Frantz has been painted white in preparation for placement on the new barge. Does anyone know when this tug and barge combination will arrive on the Great Lakes?
