Re: Max Rolls in Heavy Seas
The Montrealais lost five of her hatch-covers over the side on October 21, 1993, after departing Burns Harbor, and while the crew was cleaning the hold. I don't know if it was due to the high winds (a strong cold front was sweeping through at the time) or if she was caught in the troughs and was rol...

Re: The last great storm on the lakes
I talked to Capt. Jimmie Hobaugh back in 1988 and he related to me how the waves were from the west-northwest the night the Fitz went down and that they would get reflected off the Canadian shoreline come back into the lake interfering with the waves from the west-northwest. Marine meteorologist's w...

Re: Fitzgerald Wreckage Question
Some one asked asked earlier what direction the bow is facing relative to the course they were steering. The Fitzgerald was on a course of 141 degrees and the bow on the bottom is 125 degrees, a difference of 16 degrees. The stern is at 255 degrees. This is all according to the US Coast Guard drawin...

Re: Fitzgerald Wreckage Question
No two shipwrecks are ever the same. While the Daniel J. Morrell broke on the surface, and the stern was found miles away, the Carl D. Bradley also broke on the surface but both pieces are close together. The bow nose-diving with the propeller still turning cannot account for the large amount of tac...

There was talk back in April in the trade publication "Metal Bulletin" that Severstal Dearborn was mulling the rebuilding of the "B" blast furnace that was damaged a few years ago. If so, than the John Sherwin would be reactivated.

Burns Harbor (steel mill)
There is talk Arcelor-Mittal is banking the blast furnaces at Burns Harbor, perhaps due to the labour contract that ends on the 31st. Does this mean that Stewart J. Cort and Burns Harbor will go into layup? How will this affect other vessels. Are other mills planning on banking their blast furnaces ...

Re: Great Lakes Ships as breakwaters
I have an article from the Toronto Star, from July 1987 (the actual date has been cut off the top of the clipping) which mentions steel from the Arthur B. Homer was being used to create "protection walls and as piers." "The three-quarter-inch-thick steel plates of the hull are cut int...

Bethlehem Steel had an option with Litton for up to five thousand-footers with Litton. When the company tried to exercise their option for two thousand-footers in November 1973, and one in December 1973, Litton refused to build the ships. The 70s were a time of high inflation, and from the time the ...

Re: Roger Blough stuck in ice ID
I believe the photo was taken January 11, 1979 in the Livingstone Channel, Detroit river. There had been an ice jam in the Detroit river and the USCG had tried to use the Roger Blough to break the jam. Instead she was nearly pushed ashore due to the ice that reportedly was anchored to the river bott...

Re: 3 New Boats
Gearless means that the ships won't have self-unloading equipment, that is they are straight-deckers. I have no idea what the bidding process was like but I'm quite sure that Canadian shipbuilders couldn't bid competitively on this contract. The days of Canadian shipbuilders building lake freighters...
