Re: USCGC Bramble

Wondering if T.O.51 is going to make another run at it and that he probably would not have any trouble getting crew (myself included) to bring her home? He didn't have the money to care for her properly last time he tried to buy her, so I suspect that if he buys her this time it will probably end t...

Re: Fuel

A reasonably efficient Diesel will use about 0.4 pounds of fuel per horsepower-hour produced, or 2.5 horsepower-hours per pound of fuel. They are more efficient at fuel use than most gasoline engines, although the Napier Lion aircraft engine, produced at the end of World War One, could be tuned to u...

I have been having more health problems, so for the present, I am not working on any explorations, although I would like too.

Re: Ice breaker funding

There was also mention in the article that some legislators think moving the CG from DHS to Pentagon would be a productive move. After all, CG personnel and equipment take part in military actions around the world and a move such as this would give CG access to better funding. The sad part of this ...

Well, if she is properly maintained and her hull is still sound, she should be good for another quarter of a century.

Re: Most slender lake boat in history

The key factor in hull strength is the depth of the hull girder, defined as the distance between the ship keel to the highest continuous deck of the ship. The greater that distance, the stronger the hull, assuming that it is built to current standards. The length to beam ration is more important whe...

History of Great Lakes Shipping

While scanning through Project Gutenberg, I came across the following quite interesting book: The Great Lakes; The Vessels That Plough Them: Their Owners, Their Sailors, and Their Cargoes. The author is James Oliver Curwood, and the book dates from 1909. Aside from having some excellent photos of La...

Asian Carp and Lake Erie

I found the following link online, as well as a couple of other ones. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2016/01/05/invasive-asian-carp-could-overtake-lake-erie-study-finds/ Sounds like the carp are already in Lake Erie, just maybe not in sufficient numbers to breed. That cou...

I am just north of Chicago on the Lake, and looking at a lot of sleet with 40 mph winds from the northeast. Not good weather for any shipping on the southern end of Lake Michigan.

Re: Fitzgerald Legend Overshadowing the El Faro

I agree with the thought that the El Faro sinking should be more prevelant in discussion. What those crew members went through on both vessels makes me shudder with horror. Based on the fact that, although the El Faro was a container ship, there was essentially no debris from the sinking, aside fro...

Re: "Shipwreck discovered in Lake Erie could be toxic, ."

Two hundred thousands gallons of petroleum is equal to 4762 barrels. Using the standard rule of thumb of 7 barrels of petroleum is equal to 1 ton, the barge cargo would have been around 680 tons.

Re: "Shipwreck discovered in Lake Erie could be toxic, ."

Hmmm, 100,000 gallons of crude is less than 2500 barrels, and 100,000 gallons of benzol is also less than 2500 barrels of refined petroleum. Depending on the specific gravity of the crude, and given the length of time the barge has been on the bottom, and the temperature of the water, the crude may ...

I was looking up historic cookbooks on archive.org, and came across this treasure. It was written by Charles J. Brooks, Steward and Caterer, of Port Huron, Michigan, who was also a member of Stewards and Cook's Union, Local 299, Port Huron, Mich. . It was self-published by him in Port Huron, and loo...
