Icebreaking
On the news for yesterday February 10 there were a lot of untruths spoken by Mr Peace when it comes to icebreaking on the Great Lakes. Most of the delays Mr Peace talks about were caused by the CG's unwillingness to work at night. Some were caused by breakdowns, but not because of the age of cutters...

Still makes no sense to go the North Shore of Superior way out of your way adding miles to the trip when weather was Southerly. Why not just go to anchor outside Duluth?

You are missing one other important part of that convoy to Cleveland, the tug Barbara Ann. She was hired to break ice for the convoy in Detroit.

You are correct she had I believe 12 traction motors with V- belts connecting each to the gearbox. The whole setup was taken from locomotive parts. Somewhere I have a video of the engine room in operation just before she was re-powered in Erie,PA. This was not the original DE propulsion system in he...

Really enjoying your stories Cap! Just have a question. Were these 3 sisters not designed for a deeper than Seaway draft? I noticed on your late trip overseas you did not stop off to top off like other deep sea ships. I realize these ships were built to trade directly from lakes to overseas, but you...
