Re: Radisson/Mackinaw
The Canadian Coast Guard is not like a commerical vessel. They are a federal service in Canada. The Canadian CG is like elements of the US Border Patrol, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Environmental Protection Agency and the US Coast Guard all rolled into one. That said the Mackinaw let the Radisso...

Re: Mackinaw convoy
Scott, The only boats in the "convoy" were the Presque Isle and the Callaway. The Munson had some problems getting out of Superior due to the ice, so they were supposed to catch up later. When the PI got damaged the Mackinac left the Callaway hove to in the Ice to escort the PI back to saf...

Re: Sailor Search
The best place to start would be http://ul.bgsu.edu/cgi-bin/mpi_pub.cgi it is a database of marine personal maintained by BGSU. The Boatnerd Links page has a section of genealogical databases that could also help your search. There is also a list of museum & historical societies and also vessel ...

Re: Onboard Wifi?
Most ships yes the crew has access to the internet, but the internet is very slow and often most websites are blocked, like streaming media, youtube, ect. It's really only good for checking email and that's it.

Port Colborne Scrap Yard vessel
I went by the Port Colborne Scrap Yard a few days ago and noticed that there were 2 ships sitting next to each other. One was the Grand River vessel and the other one I had never seen before. It was at night so I didn't get a look at it's name. Does anyone know the name and/or story behind the other...

Re: New U.S. Ships
since it is so expensive to build new ships in the US, lakes shipping companies tend to do enough maintainance on their current vessels that new builds are not necessary. It's easier to shell out a few million every couple of years than mortgage a vessel that cost $20 million, then if the market goe...

Re: AKA Tow to Soo
It will take about a day or less to tow the ship depending on the speed of the tugs used to tow it. It can be done in the winter provided it's done before the locks close for the season.
