Covered bow not just for icing, but will allow the ship to go deep sea while protecting equipment and keeping the seas off the hatches nearest the bow. Many bulk carriers have been lost due to crushed hatches on number one hold. I expect this ship will run on the Atlantic coast to Newfoundland, New ...

I don't mean to be picky, but as I understand it the "uniflow" is a type of steam engine. Skinner's own version was the "Unaflow" [with a capital U and a letter "a"]. So it is quite correct to call the engine a uniflow, but when calling it a Skinner, it could also be ca...

For those wHo are fastidious about time, the pilot boarded at 1430 ADT (1330 EDT) and it was some time before the lines were let go, close to 1500 hrs ADT.

Not sure where you are getting info. The federal government has tabled return to work legislation but it has not passsed yet. It must be debated and passed by the House of Commons and Senate. If it passes, it will not take effect until proclaimed into law by royal assent. The whole process will like...

Yes the sand was pumped from the lake bottom through the suction pipe and deposited in the open hold. There was likely a screen to separate rocks from the sand, but "filtering" per se was not necessary. Sand settled to the bottom of the hold and displaced the water which flowed back overbo...

Re: Rail Sections

Canadian National buys its rail from Poland. It is landed in Halifax, and stored. It is then sent on special rail cars to Winnipeg to be welded then dispatched to work sites.

Re: Great Lakes Pilot and Ocean Vessel Crew Disagreements

I heard of case where the laker skipper had a longstanding beef with a certain pilot on the Quebec City / Escoumins run. The pilot dispatchers knew this and always assigned that pilot to the ship when they could. The skipper then gave orders when approaching the Quebec pilot station down bound for E...

There are some ship captains who think they are the supreme deity. It is only when they meet a pilot that they discover otherwise.

CSL Niagara

The live cam of CSL Niagara passing Quebec City this evening wasn't very clear, but it looks like there is an exhaust gas scrubber housing adjacent to the port funnel. Was this added at the recent refit at Verreault?

Re: St. Lawrence Seaway Opening 1959

There was a major expansion of grain handling facilities in Trois-Rivieres and Quebec City and brand new facilities in Baie-Comeau and Port-Cartier. Even the grain elevator was enlarged in Halifax due to larger ships bringing in grain from the Lakes, and those toppping up from St.Lawrence drafts.

Yes they are laid up and still for sale (listed by Marcon). There is actually no shipyard left in Sorel-Tracy, it is just a pier where they are tied up. Apparently a contract for chip transport never panned out and they have hardly been used. They did make a few trips to Port Hawksbury, Nova Scotia ...

Re: Canadian Flag - east coast trade

I think if Canada Steamship Lines and Algoma could make it pay they would use Canadian ships and crews. But obviously they can't compete with foreign flag and fofreign crew, even in short hauls between Nova Halifax and Portsmouth, New Hampshire with gypsum for example or Norfolk and Sydney with coal.

I would add some CSLers had guest cabins and longe. Jean Parisien being one. Comfortable, in a corporate sort of way, without being flashy. I believe there were two bedrooms, maybe three.

Controllable pitch propellors. The angle (pitch) of the propellor blades are adjusted remotely from the bridge of the ship to adjust speed and to reverse. Propellors can be called screws or wheels.

Is their anything left of the old McNamara dredging and marine construction base there? They had a major operation and built their own tugs and barges. One tug, named Whitby, is still in service for McNally - presently working in Halfax.

In the pre-Seaway era the canallers were all over the place, trading to the east coast, and down to the Caribbean during both world wars, but regularly trading to Halifax, Sydney, etc., Cape Breton Miner and Ontario Power were built for ocean trade in the off season and were very different from &quo...
