Re: Huletts in operation. Noisy?

night.

After an unload by the Huletts in Ashtabula (1972) we hooked up two tugs to take us (SS George Seedhouse) to the nearby coal dock. Using two tugs allowed us to go without ballast. However, being so high out of the water, the bow swung into the dock and toppled one of the Huletts ...

Re: Toledo Huletts

The 17 ton machines were built in the 1910s at the CH&D dock on the river. In 1947 (or 46) they were moved to the new Lakefront dock. The 20ton hulett were built at that time.

Re: Coal Train Question in Bellview Ohio

Your welcome Dan. I used to spend a lot of time in that area and really loved it. If I could have had the choice to live there, I would, but life had other plans for me. Now I try to get back there at least once a year for a few days. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I will do ...

Re: Coal Train Question in Bellview Ohio

Dan,
Sandusky is used exclusively to load boats. No transfers to other rail cars there. When I used to go to Bellevue regularly, the Sandusky coal trains ran big, close to 200 cars. With the new connections installed with the old Conrail at Sandusky, it is possible that the train you saw could have ...

Re: J. H. Hillman Jr. photos

He also said that the base of the hulett that they started to refurbish, they tried to convert it to a ship loader. I don't remember all of the details of whether it was to load ore or coal, or if they ever actually used it. I think this was all scrapped in 1997.

Re: J. H. Hillman Jr. photos

The dock supervisor took me out on the dock so I could get pictures of the huletts. He said that they had planned to refurbish all of the huletts, but only got started on the one.

Re: Algoma Progress

Most boats that go to scrap usually have spent time in lay up status for awhile. How often do they go from hauling a cargo one trip then right to the scrap yard? (without some kind of accident or equipment failure to cause it)

Re: Ore Movements from Ashtabula

The ore at Ashtabula was destined for the mill at Warren, OH. Sadly, that mill is now closed and being dismantled. Just aren't many places they can send it to anymore.

Niagara Aground?

Just wondering if the Niagara is aground just outside Sandusky Bay. The tug Ohio is with it now. Other boats are anchored nearby waiting out the storm, but the Niagara seems to be in pretty close.

Re: river lock cams

There used to be cameras at Lock #15 (Rock Island) and I think it was 23 or 24. I have not looked for them in several years. They were both Corps of Engineers pages. That is probably a good place to start with. I will have to find the one at Lock #7. That is closer to me.

Good Luck!

My brother works for Interlake and they don't. He shot me some nice video of them going up the river years ago. They then back out the whole way.

Re: John Sherwin

The Sherwin's future is mostly tied to Severstal. If/when they rebuild "B" Furnace, they will need her tonnage to help feed two, brand new, high capacity furnaces. The 1000 footers would not be useable for this trade.

Re: Blough Unloading into the Ferbert

I have that newspaper clipping somewhere. It was done inside the Cleveland breakwall, but I don't remember if it was loaded for Lorain or Cleveland. I believe it was some kind of efficiency test. I never heard of it being repeated.
