Olive Moore/Menominee - Cheboygan

The Olive Moore /Menominee delivered a load of stone to the Durocher Dock on the Cheboygan River late last week. At 728' overall that has to be largest boat and or tug/barge to ever deliver in Cheboygan. Does anyone know where it was loaded? It's a fairly fine grind of stone. I would love to have wa...

Re: Spartan/Spartan II

Thank you for the response. They just delivered to Superior again. I'm guessing that this tug/barge combo have about the longest runs of any on the lakes.

Spartan/Spartan II

I have been following the tug Spartan and barge Spartan II on AIS over the past month after seeing them pass thru the Straits here in Mackinac City. They take some fairly long trips including to the Lakehead, Bath and also Oshawa ON and went as far as Three Rivers PC all at the sedate lake speed of ...

Depends on hours worked in a 24 day. If the deck gang put in lots of hours loading and securing deck and then passed Detroit River Light then the would have to wait till Lake Huron

Re: Taconite Pellets

Boats I were on carried hot loads out Silver Bay with no problems. Most other docks work off stockpiles on site or deliver some distance from pellet plant to dock by rail and cool down. During the Winter Navigation Program years we hauled many hot cargoes out of Silver Bay and it actually helped kee...

Re: Great Lakes History- Arlington sinking

Re: Republic Steel C4s

Was there any particular reason that these vessels had large forward houses? Was it for guest quarters? I imagine that much of the design was just styling that was popular in the early 1950s. All 3 of the boats had 1 deck that was an observation lounge with a bar and small kitchenette and another d...

Re: Great Lakes History- Arlington sinking

I saw the May 1st Today in Great Lakes History that the Arlington sank with a load of wheat. I read in Steel on the Bottom that she was carrying a cargo of steel billets when they shifted causing a severe list and then she dropped soon after. So was it wheat or billets? You are thinking of MV Steel...

Re: Deck Camber

Though not built in the 70's the Republic C-4's had flat decks and no camber. To hose down a list had to taken on so that the water and cargo residue would go over the side. It also caused ice to build up more between the hatches from boarding seas or spray.
