Only my opinion, I think they're waiting to see what arc furnace ready products will be furnished in the near future. They will be dense cubic cargos that can be unloaded with magnets. Again, just my thoughts formed from what's been reported over the last few years. Paul, forgive my naivete, but wh...

Re: Erie Canal Beer Tank Barge Transit

That's awesome to watch when the tow is larger than the lock. I live on the Mississippi and south of Mpls - St P. They split the tow and winch the lone barge out and a deck hand stops the barge by hand with a rope around a bollard. It makes lots of noise and looks really dangerous. Hopefully someone...

Re: My starting to be a sailor

Lakercapt, it's really interesting to hear stories of ocean trades of a British shipping co. BTW, my family immigrated to Canada from Fife, specifically Cupar in the 1820's.

That tower held a "mechanical ear", a macrophone to help bridge tenders hear ships whistles in the wind. Cite: Crossing the Canal, Tony Dierkins.

Roger, thanks for listing the publication flow. I knew it was big and I was interested in the process. Also, thanks for the photo guidelines (nudge nudge) so I can submit a good shot!

Your publishing skills are bar none and I look forward to each year's release!

Fines are reduced if a company agrees to prove compliance, have a written plan of compliance and be inspected for a number of years. I remember three years in this case.

Re: " Sea Stories" Beating the storm.

In light of Al's comment, that was some really great engineering to "re-plumb" a reciprocating steam engine to run at all is quite impressive!

Re: Lead problem at Fraser

My opinion: It is more the vaporization of lead paint through cutting torches and welding. I have been a hobby printer and book maker for most of my life and I've found out that the danger that I've survived was due to smoking with lead covered fingers. It seems that vapor rather than particles are ...

Re: " Sea Stories" Beating the storm.

A little insight on engine balance. I don't know what the Oakglen had for a main but only high speed engines (ie cars, trucks) need even cylinders. Low speed (100rpm) are built as hp/cylinder so you may have a seven cylinder engine.

Thanks Capt. Metz! I reread your stories every year. I enjoy them very much, enough that it's like revisiting a favorite book (which it is).
All the best
