I thought it is quite interesting this vessel has been cruising up and down the North side of Isle Royal all afternoon instead of anchoring like the rest. Any ideas?

I'm looking forward to my copy any day now! To have an index and printed information at hand is so much faster than sorting through an internet search makes the book invaluable. Thanks Roger, the analog hard copy is still the best reference.

Re: 1-17-19 Lake Michigan port report error

To the beginning post: true, upbound in Lake Michigan is not north. On the Great Lakes, downbound is any direction that takes you toward the Atlantic Ocean regardless of the direction you are traveling or the local currents. USS Gary works is at the head of Lake Michigan and when you pull up lines y...

Doesn't Holcim primarily receive cement klinker? That's what I remember the Canadian boats delivering. Thanks

Wondering if this ore is for the flanges of the wheels or the "tires". Must have some stability properties for friction/heat expansion.

Re: American Spirit question

The 990 feet is her length between posts (LBP). Overall length is 1004 feet. The original report is correct as most ship registries show a vessel's length as (LPB) and not overall length. The newspaper would have gotten their information here: http://greatlakes.bgsu.edu/vessel/view/006835 If someon...

Re: Gott engine throbbing

I haven't seen any mention yet, but I would think it is more exhaust pulse than vibration. This being from the silence on the Duluth piers until the boat passes and then exhaust throb.

Capt. Ross, I'm glad you enjoyed relaying your stories and you only need to stop if you want to. I'm sure I speak for many that your stories have been a real joy to read. They not only describe the sailors job but also of a different point in time and culture that most of us hadn't seen. Thank you a...
