Re: Big Day at Bay - Mark W Barker Launch

I'm noticing that the Mark Barker has a large forward cargo belt elevator structure. Will there be lookout stations integrated into this structure as well? If you look around social media for photos taken from the pilothouses of the new Algoma boats with the forward booms, it really doesn't hinder ...

Re: Ryerson

The iron eating bacteria in the water of the Duluth-Superior Harbor will corrode the bottom hull plates of the Ryerson if she stays laid-up in the Twin Ports. ( It probably is already happening) Just like what happened to the John Sherwin and is occurring (severely) to the William A Irvin. If Centr...

Re: Vessels still in layup when are they sailing?

I thought if my memory is correct, wasn’t the tug Dorothy Ann along with the barge Pathfinder suppose to be getting some sort of work done as well? They’ve been laid-up at Erie, Pennsylvania all Winter and they have not sailed yet. Also in regards to the Callaway, “Wasn’t they due to get a 5-year d...

Re: Wilred Sykes

Well, the Sykes did load its first cargo of the 2021 season at Two Harbors. I doubt that it will spend much time in the ore trade as is it a little small to compete against the larger carriers involved in that trade? It will be interesting to see if Cliffs becoming involved in its operation has an ...

Re: Ryerson

in 1974 when we converted the Sykes, the ship yard had a plan to do the Ryerson the following season. The bid for the work was seven million dollars for each ship. I did not see any drawings of the proposed conversion on the Ryerson but I do believe that part of the plan was to use part of the side...

Re: C. T. C. No. 1

Crapo had her prop removed several years ago. The Iglehart has been out of service for many years and would take a lot of $$ of bring her back. Hulls are hulls at the end of the day. Tugs are cheaper than freighters. ATBs will probably be the main propulsion unit for CTC1 and Crapo/Iglehart if they...

Re: Sherwin to De Tour

Other than in the mid 2000s was there ever a time in her long layup where she was thought to be brought out of layup? Supposedly there were rumors in the late 1990's of a conversion, however, I don't believe anything ever happened in terms of dry dock inspections. During the 2000's decade, she was ...

Another reason I asked is because someone on FB who I believe works at Fraser posted a photo from inside the Ryerson engine room today. But I agree however, that the chances are extremely remote.

Ryerson

I approach this topic with caution as many people see the topic as beating a dead horse, but today's news page has a blurb about increased optimism about the Ryerson's future after the Cliffs deal earlier this year. Are these just the usual rumors, or is there something more substantial to this now?

Still being used as a reserve hull. Her engines and unloading equipment have been long gone, but Lower Lakes is keeping her for the time being. She is too expensive to scrap at the moment due to asbestos, but she is also a backup hull in case something goes wrong. I had an interesting conversation ...

Have a quick question does anyone know or can anyone estimate the number of ships on the great lakes built before 1945 that are going to the scrappers in the near furture? To name a few: Lee A Tregurtha (bow and engine room spaces) Cuyahoga Mississagi (retired 2020) Manistee (Long term lay up since...

News page item today says Senator Baldwin introduced legislation related to ice breaking activities, including money for the construction of an additional ice breaker. Good enough. I was going by what I saw (didn't see) on the satellite view on Google. It's odd that the ship not appear. BTW- I did find something interesting- Street view actually goes on board ship and goes around inside it. You can see what's left of her, even goes inside the bridge. If they thin...
